A Special Project: 10 Global Experts Write About Ways to Empower the Excluded in Global Politics

In global democracy, all affected people should have equal opportunities of participation. To explore how this principle might be realised in practice, Building Global Democracy has sponsored a project on Including the Excluded in Global Politics (IEGP). The main workshop was held in Rio de Janeiro last April.

The IEGP project commissioned 10 studies of creative ways that different marginalised groups across the world have pursued empowerment in global politics. You can now read short summaries of these rich insights here.

You can also read the IEGP workshop summary, which includes the general findings and suggestions of the IEGP project.

Also please register to receive your free copy of the forthcoming IEGP toolkit. This handy brochure will suggest how you can in your own activities promote empowerment of marginalised groups in global politics.

Farewell Andi! Welcome Shimri!

After 10 months as BGD Programme Officer, Andreina Carrillo will be leaving the team in order to have a baby!

Working as BGD Programme Officer has been a wonderful experience, and I would like to thank all my colleagues and BGD friends for your support. It has been a pleasure working with you all.

In this, my last newsletter, I would also like to welcome the new BGD Programme Officer, Shimri Zameret, who will take up the position on 1st October.  I am sure Shimri will enjoy this post as much as I did, and will bring fresh and exciting ideas with him to help in the task of building global democracy!

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unpfii/theme/images/unpfii_logo170obx.gifThe United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is an advisory body to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, with a mandate to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.

Discussions to establish the UN Permanent Forum of Indigenous Peoples began in the late 1980s, as a way to create a new body that would focus on global issues related to indigenous peoples and that would offer the opportunity for indigenous peoples to participate effectively within the UN.

The Permanent Forum is one of three UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with indigenous peoples' issues. The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous Peoples.

A Day of Action for Global Democracy and Global Change

A global day of action has been called for October 15th under the banner of 'Global Democracy' and 'United for Global Change'. Inspired by the 'Arab Spring' and the recent protests in Spain, Portugal, Iceland, Greece and Israel. Organisers hope that this day of action could unite the social movements that sprung up around the world this year into a more global one.

The initiative for the day of action came initially from Spain, but many groups around the world have joined it. Facebook events for actions on the day were created for dozens of cities around the world. The social networks tags that have been selected for the event are #GlobalDemocracy and #Globalchange.

The movement Real Democracy Now is one of the groups who originally initiated the October 15th day of action. It started in March 2011 in Spain and by May 15th had sparked massive peaceful demonstrations in major squares all around the country. Real Democracy Now is a broad social movement and has no affiliation with any political party or labour union, does not advocate violence of any kind, and is unwilling to join any existing political bodies, although it is not an apolitical movement.

Get involved through their website, facebook page or contact the organisers here.

About Us

The Building Global Democracy programme brings together academics and practitioners from around the world to advance knowledge and practice for greater public participation and control in global affairs. BGD explores how expanded 'rule by and for the people' can be achieved in respect of global issues such as climate change, financial crises, health concerns, Internet links, migration flows, security problems, and trade. The premise is that more democratic governance can encourage more effective and more legitimate responses to vital global challenges.

The BGD programme is facilitated through a convening group of ten persons based in ten world regions, with diverse backgrounds and political outlooks. Our administrative office is located in the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation at the University of Warwick in Britain. Core funding is provided through a generous grant from the Ford Foundation, with co-funding from other sources.
